Safe Haven Cat Rescue Brings Low Cost Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic To Stafford Township!
First time it’s ever been offered in this area

STAFFORD TWP… Manahawkin-based Safe Haven Cat Rescue is bringing The Humane Society of Atlantic County’s Mobile Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic to Stafford Township on July 18th. The clinic is just for cats this time.
The clinic is offering early-age spaying/neutering of kittens. Kittens need to be at least 8 weeks old and weigh a minimum of 2 pounds to qualify. The cost to get an adult cat or kitten spayed / neutered will be $45.00. Vaccines and a Frontline Plus flea treatment will also be offered at a reduced cost.

Safe Haven is a small group of foster homes. It is run by two women, Lisa Antulonis and Candy Wambold, who receive no compensation for their efforts. Safe Haven is a No Kill, Non Profit 501(c)3 Charity that receives no state funding and relies solely on donations to care for their cats and to bring programs like this clinic to Stafford Township.

“We are very pleased to offer this to the public,” says Antulonis. “We’ve been told that a clinic like this has never been offered in this area. We have been dreaming of this day for years, we feel it’s very important.”

Safe Haven originally planned to bring the Mobile Clinic in 2005, but Antulonis, who is the President and founder of Safe Haven, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer early last year. She was sidelined for almost all of 2005, which put the rescue back a year in their planning. “2005 was a rough year for us.” Antulonis says.

Wambold and Antulonis were determined to make it happen in 2006. Through the generosity of their donors and volunteers, and with the success of their last fundraising yard sale, they finally got the resources together to enable the clinic to come to Stafford Township.

Safe Haven has no facility, which is another reason bringing the clinic to Stafford was difficult.

“It’s extremely complicated when you don’t have a building. We had to find a location that was big enough to hold up to 70 cat carriers and was also large enough for the 40 foot clinic trailer with a 220-volt electrical hookup. We don’t have rows of cages like a shelter would. We have to coordinate carriers and a space to put all those carriers in. It’s incredibly difficult for us to do something like this” Antulonis says. “We feel it’s worth the effort. We would love to also do a dog clinic, but dogs need even more room, so I don’t know if that’s going to be possible for us. If this cat clinic goes well we would like to bring it back several times a year.”

Safe Haven is active in the towns of Manahawkin, Barnegat, Long Beach Island and Tuckerton. They are working directly in the community. “We get overwhelmed with the requests for help just in these 4 areas. We did a house in Barnegat 2 years ago, where we took in 23 cats all under a year old, 11 of which were under a month old. We had a property in Manahawkin where we took in 13 kittens i n one day in June this year. These aren’t neglectful owners; they just don’t realize how quickly a cat can get pregnant and then they end up with a real mess on their hands,” says Wambold.

Candy and Lisa have a lot of hopes for the Rescue’s future. “We’re dreaming of the ultimate cat adoption center” Antulonis says “A space with lots of places for the cats to climb and windows so they can sit in the sunshine. We’ve managed to bring the clinic, so who knows? You have to dream big.”
